Mobile device advice for ecommerce conversion rates
02/07/2010
With mobile browsing on the up, it might be important to optimise websites to improve conversion rates.
Businesses with ecommerce operations have again been given some advice on the issue of optimising their websites for mobile devices.
The growth of the smartphone market, as well as increasing internet speeds, means that many consumers now use devices such as the iPhone or HTC Desire to browse the web and buy goods.
Writing for Smartcompany, marketing expert Chris Smith notes this growth and explains how, looking at the Google Analytics data of his cutomers, it is clear that people are already making purchases through the iPhone and iPad.
However, the conversion rates are considerably lower than desktop browsing figures, and he attributes this to the sites not being optimised and suggests ways of improving this.
He says: "The most obvious is to browse your site using your own or a borrowed iPad or smartphone and try and make a purchase. Make notes about the things preventing you from achieving your goal.
"You'll probably find the most common issues arise from navigation links being too small, too close together and fiddly to 'tap' or the use of flash."
In addition to developing websites, many organisations are building applications specifically for certain handsets.
