Conversion rate optimisation on mobile phone websites
08/07/2010
Areas for conversion rate improvement have been highlighted for various mobile phone websites.
A conversion rate expert has assessed the website optimisation efforts of a number of mobile phone companies.
In an article for Search Engine Land, Paddy Moogan looks at the browsing and checkout process for the new iPhone across the Vodafone, Orange and O2 websites.
He finds that, although the ability to pre-order was a plus, a bug on the Vodafone website caused his shopping basket to be emptied at one point.
The O2 website comes in for criticism for not having a consistent design layout across the various pages a visitor would need to access to buy the handset, although the simple specification choice step was highlighted as a plus point.
Finally, the Orange website is commended for having clear calls-to-action and explanations of why it should be chosen over its competitors, although popups are a negative.
Mr Moogan says: "Test your website properly - small technical bugs can cost you money.
"List the needs of your user and what is important to them [and] satisfy the needs in your sales process."
The new Apple iPhone was released on June 24th and 1.7 million of the handsets were sold within three days.
