Consumers prefer email to telemarketing
05/08/2010
The majority of consumers prefer to receive marketing communications via email, a new survey shows.
Online retailers may have a better chance of improving website conversion by marketing via email rather than over the telephone.
According to a survey by marketing company smartFOCUS, consumers prefer to be contacted about new products and services in this way.
Indeed, some 71 per cent of those questioned said email was their preferred choice for marketing communications.
By contrast, just 21 per cent favoured social media, while five per cent chose text messaging and three per cent expressed a preference for direct mail.
None of the respondents named telemarketing as their favourite method of contact. In fact, more than half named it as their least preferred.
"Email has developed into a mature, primary source of information for both consumers and marketers," said smartFOCUS operations director Tim Watson.
"If companies want to communicate effectively with customers, they need to do so using the channels that customers use and interact with the most."
